Peter Boylan's career has been characterised by two inextricably-linked passions – motor racing and entrepreneurial success.

It is little surprise then, that - at an age when most men would have been contemplating a well-earned retirement - the high-flying businessman and performance car driver launched Boylan Traffic Solutions, a hire company specialising in road safety equipment.

It's an industry that is very close to his heart. Both in his professional and personal life – he was a close friend of the late Peter Brock – he has witnessed the heartbreak of accidental death. "I've been to too many funerals where I've been left with the thought that maybe something could have been done to prevent it," Peter says.

Since its launch three years ago, BTS has steadfastly built a reputation for reliability, service and innovation. The company has recently acquired exclusive distribution rights to the BarrierGuard 800 – a new prefabricated steel barrier set to revolutionise the road safety industry in Australia. "This barrier has the ability to contain the vehicle and absorb the impact, applying safety technology that's very similar to that used in the latest cars," Peter says. "When a car hits the barrier, it moves - absorbing the impact and minimising the damage to the car and, most importantly, injury to the passengers."

Peter's entrepreneurial flair emerged early in life. Born in 1944 to working-class parents, he was a millionaire by the age of 30 – wealth created from the success of a soft drink bottling business he had purchased in Darwin as a bankrupt operation.

By 1974, it was the largest soft drink company in the Northern Territory. However, like so many other businesses, it was virtually wiped out by Cyclone Tracy. While the factory remained standing, its customer base fled south, leaving behind millions of dollars of unpaid debts. Bruised, but not broken, Peter expanded his business to Perth in 1975. "It was at that point that I took up motor racing," Peter says. "At 32, I was a late starter but I'd always been fascinated with the sport and I saw it as a good way of promoting my business."

In 2004, Peter scored a business coup with the sale of Quirks Refrigeration – then Australia's largest privately-owned rental, sales and service company - to Coca-Cola Amatil.

He had started the business in 1979 under the name Pacific Refrigeration, a rental, sales and service company which he merged a decade later with Melbourne-based manufacturer Quirks.

In 2006, he formed Boylan Traffic Solutions. "People say to me, 'You don’t need the money ... what are you doing working for a living'?" Boylan says. "I say, 'I'm not working – I love what I’m doing'. "I love to see success and to see my employees achieving success."

Family has always been an important part of Peter's life. The father of three adult daughters, he is ably assisted in the BTS business operation by his devoted wife Annette.
