BarrierGuard 800
World first ... innovative technology was used in West Gate Bridge deployment
A groundbreaking deployment of BarrierGuard 800 on Melbourne’s West Gate Bridge has re-written the manuals on how safety barriers can be installed and utilised.
In a world first, the BG800 was deployed using innovative technology that temporarily fused the steel guard to the bridge deck and existing permanent concrete barrier.
Boylan Traffic Solutions national operations manager Wayne Duckworth said the steel barrier was chosen for its lightweight properties and stellar safety rating.
“With any steel structure such as the West Gate, weight is a critical factor,” Mr Duckworth said.
“The BarrierGuard 800 is the lightest high-speed barrier available in Australia and it’s also the highest rated for safety, so it was a natural choice,” he said.
The installation was carried out by John Holland Construction on behalf of the West Gate Bridge Strengthening Alliance.
The iconic West Gate Bridge - a critical section of Melbourne's M1 road network - is currently being strengthened to improve its long-term sustainability and increase its capacity to five lanes of traffic each way.
The project is part of the Monash-CityLink-West Gate Upgrade - a $1.39 billion infrastructure investment by the Victorian Government. The West Gate Bridge section of the project is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments.
“The technical complexity of this deployment has been a giant step for the BTS team,” Mr Duckworth said.
“It’s rewarded us with invaluable expertise which, we anticipate, will be highly regarded in the industry in the future,’’ he said.
